Student Reflection by Gobhanu Korisepati (C’27 W’27, Hindi target)
This summer, I had the profound opportunity to lead and expand the operations of SWIFTmfi, an initiative close to my heart aimed at Sustaining Women in Financial Turmoil. Based primarily in Muscat, Oman, and Chennai, India, I worked as the Executive Chairman of SWIFTmfi, coordinating our efforts across these regions and also collaborating with KIVA in the UAE to enhance our fundraising capabilities.
My motivation for pursuing this opportunity was driven by a combination of personal conviction and the desire to enact tangible change. The plight of underprivileged communities, especially women suffering from financial exclusion, has always resonated deeply with me. This summer’s project was not only a chance to combat gendered inequality but also to foster sustainable community development through microfinance. During this period, I learned several invaluable lessons that I plan to carry forward into my studies at Huntsman and beyond:
- Strategic Collaboration: Establishing SWIFTmfi as a non-banking financial company in Chennai taught me the importance of navigating local government relationships and strategic partnerships.
- Innovation in Fundraising: Working with KIVA in the UAE and officially becoming a Trustee, we explored innovative global fundraising strategies, learning to leverage international platforms for local benefit. Notably, I met and got involved with numerous Penn Alumni.
The funding provided by the Huntsman Program was instrumental in allowing me to pursue these initiatives. It not only alleviated the financial burdens associated with unpaid internships but also affirmed the value of integrating business acumen with international studies to address global challenges. This support was crucial in enabling the successful execution of our projects and the expansion of our impact.
Reflecting on this experience, I am immensely grateful for the skills, insights, and relationships I’ve developed. These lessons will be integral to my continued academic and professional journey, particularly as I seek to further integrate the principles of social good with sustainable business practices.
This summer was a transformative experience that has not only impacted the communities we serve but also profoundly influenced my personal and professional growth. I am eager to bring back these learnings to the Huntsman community, hoping to inspire and engage others in meaningful global initiatives.
